More about One on One Tutoring
If you’re struggling with math, tutoring can be a great way to get past some roadblocks. Often the professors have trouble putting themselves in your shoes and explaining things on your level. Tutoring can help. But you also need to solve problems on your own.
Tutoring can be a good way to complement your studies. It shouldn’t be a replacement for your studies. If you only work on math during a tutoring session, then you’re going to have problems during the exam when I’m not there to offer advice about the best approach to use on a problem or to catch your mistakes.
You should bring your textbook to every tutoring session.
The best use of an hour of tutoring is to try to look over the sections you’re having problems with before we meet. That way, you have the concepts in your mind before we even see each other. Even if it doesn’t make a lot of sense when you read them, it will “click” when I explain it. If you can try some of the homework problems, even better. Whether you get several (or all) of them wrong, or only a few wrong, it’ll help me to quickly diagnose any misunderstandings you may be having. It will also give you an idea of what you understand and what you don’t.
If you aren’t sure how to start the homework problems - that’s ok, too. We can go through the homework during our tutoring session. You will learn better if you do the problems yourself - I can show you how to solve a few and then you can try a few on your own. If you prefer watching me solve them all, we can do that, too.
I can tell you what I think the best use of our time is. But, in the end, it’s up to you how we spend our hour together.
Tutoring is not a quick fix and it is no guarantee of a high grade. Being tutored shouldn’t be a replacement for studying. If you don’t put in the time outside of tutoring, you won’t do well in the class. But, I’ve helped many students go from a failing grade to a mark above 70 and I’ve seen others raise their mark from the 70s to the 90s.
One hour of tutoring can save you several hours worth of headaches.
A single semester course at the University of Western Ontario can cost over $500. A small investment of your time and money could save you from having to retake a course.
You should make sure you get help as soon as you stop understanding the material. In math, each new concept builds upon the previous one. If you aren’t understanding something today, chances are it will only be worse tomorrow. Don’t wait until exam time before you get help! See your professor during his or her office hours. Go to a math help center. Or get a tutor.
